A voice call lets you speak instructions to your Hand while continuing to work in the Console. You need a ready Hand, a supported browser and microphone access.
Make a call
- In the Hands Console, open Chat → Chat.
- Select Call {Hand name}. Allow microphone access if your browser asks.
- Wait for the connection to finish preparing. This can take a little time; avoid pressing Call repeatedly.
- Speak to your Hand. The call shows a transcript and recorded actions when available.
- Use the microphone control to mute or unmute, and hang up to end the call.
You can cancel while a call is connecting. After the configured period of silence, the call asks whether you are still there; it ends shortly afterwards unless you respond. If your Hand requests approval, select Review; see Review approvals and actions.
You can move to another Console section without ending your call. Use the floating call bar to Return to call, mute, or minimize the controls. If you open another Hand while a call is active, use that bar to return to the existing call.
Change voice preferences
- In Chat → Chat, select the Voice settings gear. During a call, it is also available on the call bar.
- Adjust available settings: Voice, End after inactivity, Agent model and Reasoning effort.
- Select Play sample to preview a voice, then Save. These preferences apply to subsequent calls.
- Keep screen on during calls can prevent the screen from turning off where supported. This is a device-only setting and works while Hands is visible.
Some Hands also display Voice account, offering a choice between Hands voice and your own ChatGPT account. This setting is not available to everyone. Available voices and models can depend on the account and enabled voice mode.
Connect or recover the OpenAI voice account
This account flow appears only on supported, ready Hands. It belongs to Chat and Voice settings, not to Integrations → Providers. Some calls use an account provided by Hands, so you do not always need your own ChatGPT account.
If you see Connect to {Hand name} instead of Call {Hand name}, open it or go to Voice settings → ChatGPT. The button can also show:
- Checking connection: wait for the current account check; this does not by itself mean the account is disconnected.
- Restore connection: a previously connected account needs sign-in again.
- Check connection: Hands could not obtain a definitive status. Open it to inspect the account rather than assuming it is disconnected.
Sign in with a device code
- Choose the device-code method when it is offered.
- Select Copy code & open OpenAI, sign in with the intended ChatGPT account and approve the connection.
- Return to Hands and wait while it checks the account on this Hand. A device code expires after about 15 minutes; choose Get a new code if it expires.
If device-code sign-in is disabled, check ChatGPT Settings → Security or use the other method offered by Hands. A managed workspace may disallow device codes under its own policy.
Sign in in your browser
- Choose Other sign-in method, then Open OpenAI in my browser.
- Complete the OpenAI sign-in. The final redirect uses a local address and may show that the page cannot be reached; that page does not need to load.
- Copy the complete address from the browser bar, including everything after the question mark, return to Hands and paste it into Final loopback URL from OpenAI.
- The final address uses
127.0.0.1orlocalhost, port1455or1457, and the path/auth/callback. Keep the complete address, including its query string, private.
The browser sign-in expires after about 10 minutes. Start again if Hands says it expired. A provider approval alone is not the final result: wait until Hands reports OpenAI is connected to this Hand and the main action changes to Call {Hand name}.
Recover or disconnect
- If the Hand is busy with a call or account check, wait for the automatic retry instead of pressing Connect repeatedly.
- If the private sign-in browser is busy or cannot open, retry later or use a device code.
- If the callback is refused, copy the complete final address from the same sign-in attempt and paste it again.
- If the Hand is not ready, wait until it is ready before starting a new connection.
- Open Connection options to sign in again, change account or Disconnect ChatGPT when those actions are available.
A failed check can leave the previous verified status on screen. Use the current message and account controls; do not treat an unavailable check as proof that the account was removed.
No audio or connection?
- Check microphone permission and the selected input/output devices in your browser.
- Use Resume audio or Resume microphone if offered after an interruption.
- If your Hand is not ready, try again when its status says it is ready.
- If Chat asks for ChatGPT sign-in, finish that flow first; an ongoing connection check is not necessarily a failed login.
- If your browser lacks WebRTC or microphone support, switch to a supported current browser.
Typing during a call: the text you send becomes part of the same call. Outside a call, typing starts a voice call on most Hands; see Chat with your Hand.
